The Witcher: Blood Origin finishes filming

The series will take 1200 years before the main show and explore important events like the creation of the first Witcher.

Filming has officially wrapped on The Witcher prequel series Blood Origin. 

Showrunner Declan De Barra took to Twitter yesterday (21st November) to confirm the news, posting a picture of both the first and last slate.

Even though shooting is now complete the show is likely still quite a way off being released due to the amount of post-production, particularly the adding of visual effects, which needs to be done. 

Set 1200 years before the events of the original, The Witcher: Blood Origin “will tell a story lost to time - the origin of the very first Witcher and the events that lead to the pivotal conjunction of the spheres,” reads the official plot synopsis. 

The latter is an extremely important event in the lore of both the series and the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski on which it’s based that saw the worlds of elves, men and monsters merge into one. 

Sophia Brown, Michelle Yeoh, Laurence O’ Fuarain, Mirren Mack, Lenny Henry, Jacob Collins, Lizzie Annis, Huw Novelli, Francesca Mills, Amy Murray, Nathaniel Curtis, Zach Wyatt and Dylan Moran are all set to star. 

The Witcher: Blood Origins will consist of six episodes all of which will also be written by De Barra. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will serve as an executive producer alongside Jason Brown, Sean Daniel, Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko. 

Although a release date for Blood Origin is not yet known, The Witcher fans have just a few weeks to wait until the highly-anticipated second season of the main show hits Netflix on 17th December.
